21 Days of Game Development: Embarking on a New Journey Once Again

The TapTap Annual Game Awards 2025, held earlier this year, was a star-studded awards ceremony for the gaming industry.Guillaume Broch, Game Director of *Expedition 33*; Kazutaka Oga, Producer of *Danganronpa*; and Huang Zaihao, Producer of *Diver Dave*—these renowned industry veterans traveled from all corners of the globe to gather together on this night in Shanghai.

During one of the award ceremonies, a Chinese college student named Yan Jinchen took the stage and, under the watchful eyes of industry veterans, accepted two heavy trophies—the “Best Game” and “Best Student Project” awards—from Huang Yimeng, CEO of Xindong.

A few months before participating in the Game Awards, he and his teammates spent 21 days creating the puzzle game *Type Error* at the second TapTap Spotlight Game Jam, which propelled them into the industry spotlight.

From the moment an idea strikes to the moment you actually step into the spotlight, all that stands in between is an event where game developers showcase their passion and express themselves—that’s the Game Jam, a game creation challenge that doesn’t ask about your background, but is all about creativity, talent, and passion.

Traditionally, a Game Jam is simply a “time-limited game development” competition. Participants must create a playable game from scratch within a strict time limit, based on a theme announced on-site.Testing participants’ ingenuity, typing speed, and physical endurance—specifically their ability to pull all-nighters—is standard fare at a GameJam. It also typically requires participants to be proficient in a specific aspect of game development and to contribute efficiently to one of the key areas, such as coding, game design, or art.

The TapTap Spotlight GameJam did something quite different. The event extended the relatively common 48-hour creation period to 21 days and moved the challenge from an in-person to an online format. The extra time allowed creators to polish their work to a higher level of completion, while the online format meant that anyone with an idea could sign up, no matter where they were.

At the same time, the barriers to entry have been significantly lowered. On the spotlight stage, the contestants came from all walks of life: students, media professionals, office workers, international students across different time zones, and even complete beginners who were opening a game engine for the first time. Each team started from a different point, but all had just 21 days to race toward the same finish line.

Yan Jinchen’s story is not an isolated case; it is merely one aspect that has been brought to light under the spotlight.

Last year, the second TapTap Spotlight GameJam, themed “Are You Sure This Isn’t a Bug?”, attracted over a thousand teams to participate, with more than 600 games ultimately completed. In addition to the Best Game award winner, *Error Type: Type Error*, other outstanding titles included *Cat Café Ghost Stories*, which took home the Best Popular Mobile Game award, and *Atana*, which won Best Popular PC Game.

Behind *Dream Therapy Realm* lies a team of media professionals who crossed disciplinary boundaries to collaborate on this project; The team behind *2P Connecting* took their work to Shenzhen University and in-person exhibitions… One competition, more than 600 starting points—some leading to the podium, some to even grander creative journeys, and some to versions of themselves the creators had never imagined.

Spotlight also holds another significance: the journey of great games doesn’t end when the competition does. They remain on TapTap, where more players can discover and review them, allowing the teams to continue growing. Some entries from previous years have continued to be refined after the competition ended, preparing to enter the official commercial market; other teams were truly forged through this competition and have gone on to create one increasingly polished title after another.

It’s fair to say that “Spotlight” is more than just a 21-day limited-time challenge—it’s also the first step where many great ideas take root within the TapTap ecosystem.

This year marks the third edition of the “TapTap Spotlight 21-Day Game Creation Challenge,” with registration open from September 1 to September 30.This time, TapTap has introduced a more refined competition format, more generous prize money, and a more rigorous judging process. Of course, one thing that remains unchanged is the invitation to everyone: “21 Days to Make a Game.”

More exposure and greater creative freedom

Game developers fear two things above all else: first, not being able to finish the game, and second, finishing it only to find that no one plays it.

The format of this year’s Spotlight GameJam was, to some extent, designed specifically to address these two “fears.”

First, the event still maintains a 21-day development cycle, running from October 1 to October 21. This gives everyone plenty of time to bring an idea from their mind to the screen, without the period being so long that participants lose a sense of urgency.

At last year’s Spotlight GameJam, more than 600 entries were successfully brought to life. While such a large number of games is a cause for great joy, it also puts pressure on the judges and makes it a tight race to ensure players get to see the best titles. With the addition of “TapTap Maker” this year, there’s every reason to believe that the number of entries for this event will continue to grow.

Building on this, this edition of Spotlight has extended the demo review period from 30 days last year to 41 days this year, running from October 25 to December 3.This additional time—nearly half as long as last year’s period—serves a single purpose: to give great games more opportunities to be discovered by players, appreciated by judges, and discussed by the community, thereby creating more space and room for them to “be seen.”

The 2026 TapTap Spotlight GameJam features a prize pool of one million, with awards even more generous than last year. Incentive-based awards remain in place, so as long as a submission is outstanding enough, it can still yield significant rewards and recognition even without winning a “Best of” award.

Compared to last year, this year’s game development challenge has added two new awards: the “Best TapTap Maker Award” and the “Best Cross-Platform Game Award.” The former is for games developed using “TapTap Maker” and can be won in conjunction with other awards; the latter evaluates a game’s cross-platform compatibility between PC and mobile devices.

Since we’ve mentioned “TapTap Creation,” there’s an even more fundamental change in this year’s creative challenge—compared to the competition format and prize money—and that is that the barriers to entry for game development itself are being redefined.

Earlier this year, TapTap officially launched “TapTap Maker,” an AI game creation agent. It is a game AI engine built around the core philosophy of “think it, build it.” Users simply need to describe their ideas in natural language, and it will brainstorm with them and directly help turn those ideas into playable games.

To put it simply, let's say you tell it: "I want to make a café simulation game where players take on the role of a barista and prepare drinks for customers through dialogue."

It will then begin discussing with you: What kind of personality does the guest have? How should drinks be paired? How should the dialogue branches unfold? How should the gameplay loop be designed? And a whole range of other considerations for game design.

After a few rounds of revisions, a complete and detailed game design document was finalized, and based on this document, everyone can create their own game demo.

TapTap Maker doesn’t require you to write code, compose music, or draw. You just need to come up with the creative idea, and it will help everyone turn that idea into a game and publish it on the TapTap platform—the entire process can be completed right within the chat window.

In March of this year, the “TapTap Maker Weekend” 24-Hour Challenge took place in Shanghai. Nearly 200 creators participated individually, each using TapTap Maker to independently develop a game. The participants ranged from complete beginners with no prior experience in game development to industry veterans with years of experience, and even included several elementary school students.

While everyone’s experience and skills varied, the vast majority of participants at the event managed to create a playable game demo from scratch—on their own—within 24 hours, likely making it the first game they’d ever created.

In this edition of the Spotlight 21-Day Game Creation Challenge, games developed using TapTap’s “ZhiZao” platform will compete alongside all other entries in the same pool, be judged according to uniform standards, and be eligible for all awards. There will be no separate category, and no distinction will be made between entries. Participating creators will also receive 100,000 ZhiZao Points (AI creation credits) as support.

TapTap takes an open approach to the use of AI tools; creators simply need to include a statement explaining their use of AI when submitting their work. Numerous “Spotlight” initiatives over the past year or so have repeatedly confirmed one conclusion: what truly determines the quality of a work is still human aesthetic sensibility, judgment, and creativity. AI is a partner to creators, not a substitute for their creative process.

Tools are changing, and the barriers to entry are shifting along with them, but the essence of creation remains the same—it’s still that person driven by a dream, sitting in front of a screen, turning a romantic idea buried deep in their mind into something others can experience.

A GameJam is never a solitary, arduous creative endeavor; it’s the first step for many on their journey to becoming game developers—a journey of dialogue with the market, players, and fellow creators. Some have undergone a transformation from zero to one here; others have found like-minded partners; and still others have taken their creations to a broader stage. Above all, every participant will carry with them unforgettable memories of creating games with total dedication.

This is the purpose of the spotlight: to illuminate the path—once thought to be out of reach—from “hobbyist to creator.”This journey won’t come to an abrupt end after 21 days, because the vitality of creativity lasts far longer than a single competition. It will remain on TapTap, where more players will discover it, where it will continue to be refined, and where it will have the opportunity to reach even bigger stages. This is also what Spotlight truly aims to achieve—helping great ideas grow into great games.

If you have an idea for a game but keep thinking, “I can’t do it”—we have reason to believe that, in the upcoming 21 days, Spotlight might just be the answer you’re looking for.
