GDC recently released its U.S. Game Developer Salary Survey, which revealed that the average annual salary for U.S. developers is $142,000 (approximately 1 million RMB). GDC noted that the survey was conducted in July of this year based on responses from 562 U.S. developers.

A survey found that 60% of respondents reported a "slight increase" in their salaries compared to last year.
When breaking down the survey respondents, 25% reported annual salaries between $125,000 and $200,000, 23% reported salaries between $50,000 and $100,000, and 5% reported annual salaries of less than $15,000.
Developers from AAA game studios, as well as employees at major game companies, generally earn higher salaries.
A survey shows that 85% of AAA game developers earn more than $100,000 annually, 75% of AA game developers earn more than $100,000, while only 50% of indie game developers reach this annual salary.
When categorized by job type, management and operations roles offer the highest salaries, while visual arts roles tend to be relatively lower:
- Visual Arts – $124,000
- Audio and Sound Effects—$132,000
- Planning – $133,000
- Marketing and Business – $134,000
- Programming – $150,000
- Management and Operations – $160,000
In China, audio-related roles are not widely publicized, and only a few large-scale project teams place particular emphasis on them. However, as game quality continues to improve and the industry strives to match the standards of AAA games, audio and sound design will become a crucial part of the production pipeline, just as they are in the Western AAA game industry.
Eighty percent of respondents said their current salary meets or exceeds their basic needs. Although their salaries cover their basic needs, 50% of developers still feel their pay is too low; this sentiment is particularly pronounced among part-time developers such as contract workers and consultants, where the figure reaches 69%.
The survey also revealed that 25% of respondents had been laid off in the past two years, and nearly half of them have not yet found new jobs. As a result, 80% of respondents believe that the gaming industry is not as "secure" as other industries.
Last week, Game Teahouse wrote about the bleak state of the gaming industry in Europe and the U.S., where it’s not uncommon for many professionals to be unemployed for a year.
