Wooga: Negative Emotions Toward a Game Can Boost Engagement and Retention

Many people believe that games should avoid evoking negative emotions, but Wooga (a German social mobile game developer) argues that games should actively trigger negative emotions in players, believing that these emotions will actually boost player engagement and retention.Wooga cites the example of *Jelly Splash*, where the inclusion of extremely “insanely hard” levels actually motivates players even more to beat them.

It is only by evoking negative emotions in players that you can make them both hate and love the game intensely. The three core ways to create a sense of frustration in players are: increasing the game’s difficulty, establishing the FUUU index (Teahouse Note: If a player needs to try 100 times to clear a level and is only five attempts away from success, the FUUU index is 20.The frustration stemming from repeated attempts before clearing a level and from failing just before success), maintaining the game’s casual nature, and incorporating more elements of chance.

Microsoft Game Studios: Game Storylines Are Overrated

Numerous studies show that the plot itself does not evoke much emotional response from players, but the characters do. Research by Microsoft indicates that when asked about a game’s plot, players have a hard time recalling the storylines of the games they’ve played. Game characters, however, are consistently remembered. The data also shows that various quests tied to the plot are generally remembered.

Immersyve: 96% of iOS revenue comes from games released six months ago

Game developers should stop approaching mobile games with a console-game mindset—not only because console games face technical limitations on high-end mobile devices, but more importantly, because console games aren’t suited to the habits of mobile gamers. Mobile gamers typically want to play only one or two games at a time, and if you can’t keep the gameplay pace to about five minutes per session, they’ll stop playing your game.

FPS games on mobile gaming platforms account for less than 2% of total mobile game revenue, and only 4% of mobile gamers have tried this genre. Every month, 9,000 new apps are released on the App Store, but 96% of iOS revenue comes from games that have been on the revenue charts for at least six months.

The importance of mobile phones: While carrier billing still reigns supreme, this trend is set to change in 2014. Both Alipay and WeChat are changing their payment processing methods. Product exposure methods and channels are undergoing a shake-up, and even smaller markets are being restructured.
